I've played with the Depth of Field settings, but I always found it hit and miss (and it does take a long time to render). I found it quicker to render each layer separately, then blur each one to a desired level.

But one day, for more complex scenes, I think I may have to swallow the bitter DOF pill.:s

yeah I do that too, and use layer masks to blend them, but sometimes it's just fun to do one the hard way, especially if you're about to go to sleep, so it can just run overnight.
